Learning to read is
critical to a child’s success, both in school and in life. Children and adults
with low literacy skills have poor educational, employment and health outlooks.
Many of them will not graduate from high school, will earn barely enough to
stay above poverty levels, and will be more likely to engage in criminal and
anti-social behaviors.
Sadly, 42 percent of
children in the United States—more than 30 million—live in low-income
households where there are no age-appropriate books at home.
Literacy is absolutely
crucial in breaking the cycle of poverty, but a child without access to books
never has the chance to become an engaged and capable reader.
Luckily, these are
problems we can solve. First Book is a nonprofit organization that combats the
single biggest barrier to the development of literacy: access to books.
First Book provides
teachers and program administrators with greater purchasing power and access to
high-quality books that otherwise would not be available to them. Through First
Book, educators can create enriched learning experiences for their students,
and the children can enjoy an ongoing supply of wonderful new books. To date,
they’ve distributed more than 100 million books and educational resources to
programs and schools throughout the United States and Canada.
Your clicks help give American children their very
first books, and along with them, the opportunity to discover a lifelong love
of learning and break the cycle of poverty. Click today!
